4 Great Kitchen Gadgets to Help You Lose Weight
August 19, 20121 Comments

If you're trying to lose weight, it's important to have the right tools on hand to maximize your chances of success. Many people turn to fast food and frozen food because it is often much more convenient to prepare than fresh healthy food is; make sure that you have the right gadgets in your kitchen to make preparing healthy meals easy. After all, you will be more likely to make healthy choices if the food you make is both convenient and delicious! Below are some kitchen appliances that make it easier to eat a healthy, balanced diet.

Kitchen Scale

A kitchen scale is by far the most vital kitchen gadget you can have when you are trying to lose weight. There are a number of places on the internet where you can go to log your food and track your daily calorie intake. However, without a kitchen scale it's impossible to know how much you have really eaten.

For example, let's say you buy a whole cake from the grocery store and then cut off a slice of it for yourself for dessert. When you look up the nutrition information for the cake, the serving size will most likely be given as "one slice" with a weight listed in grams beside it. Your idea of what makes up one slice of cake and the manufacturer's idea of what makes up one slice of cake are likely not at all the same, but if you have a kitchen scale you can weigh out your slice and find out how many calories are in that exact portion you are eating.

Owning a kitchen scale allows you to find out with exacting precision how many calories you really are eating during the day and helps you to learn more about what typical portion sizes are.

Vegetable Steamer

Eating vegetables is an important part of losing weight; they are very low in fat and calories and high in fiber as well as vitamins and minerals. They help to add bulk to your food without adding very many calories. Most people, however, cannot stand the texture of raw vegetables. Unfortunately, boiling vegetables to cook them causes them to lose vitamins and minerals since they will leach out into the water that you boil them in. Steaming vegetables is the answer to having appetizing vegetables that retain their full nutrient content.

Purchasing a vegetable steamer provides you with a quick and easy way to steam vegetables; all you need to do is add water, add the vegetables, plug it in and turn it on. A vegetable steamer helps you lose weight because it makes cooking vegetables convenient; as an added bonus, they don't lose any of their nutritional value!

Convection Oven

Fried food is unquestionably bad for you; not only does frying food add a considerable amount of fat to the food due to it soaking up oil, heating oil to the high temperatures used in frying produces heterocyclic amines (known as HCAs) that have been shown to cause cancer in both human and animal studies. As a result of deep-frying being a terrible choice for people trying to eat healthily and watch their weight, cookbooks have been developing a strategy of frying foods in the oven by baking them; this is called air-frying.

Unfortunately, if you have tried to make air-fried food before, you know that it really does not compare to oil-fried food. The reason for this is that the breading on the food gets soaked with steam rising up from the food so it does not brown and get properly crunchy, and if it does brown it means that you have cooked all the water out of the food, leaving it a bone-dry mess!

This is where convection ovens come in; convection ovens work by having fans installed in the oven circulate the hot air around the inside of the oven. Having the air blow against the food being cooked helps to heat the food faster, which results in quicker cooking times. Additionally, the air helps to remove excess water from the breading when you are attempting to air-fry foods. Food air-fried in a convection oven is much more appetizing than that from a conventional oven. A convection oven can help you lose weight by allowing you to cook food that has the taste and texture of fried food without all the added fat and calories from the oil.

Vegetable Juicer

Most people who are tying to lose weight drink a lot of fruit juices. Fruit juices, while having a lot of vitamins and antioxidants, are still frustratingly high in calories and can be hard to work into your diet plan. A lower-calorie solution to fruit juice is vegetable juice, which you can make at home with a vegetable juicer.

Popular and tasty vegetables commonly juiced are carrots, beets and spinach. Leafy green vegetables, such as spinach and kale, are excellent ways to add vitamins and minerals to your diet while being much lower in calories than fruit juices. A vegetable juicer gives you a source of tasty beverages that are both good for you and very low in calories.

Mental Wellness--What It Takes
July 28, 2012 4 Comments
Keeping a healthy mind should probably be the prime concern for everybody. After all, all other activities that we do in our everyday lives is controlled and facilitated by the mind. There’s always thinking involved in everything, from doing reports and analyses as part of professional duties, to studying and reviewing as part of the academic responsibilities of students. There’s also thinking involved even in the most basic routines in life, like eating and sleeping!

It goes without saying then that maintaining good mental health is key to having a successful and productive life. Just imagine what a mess it would be if you are nursing an unhealthy mind that last the entire day, let alone a week, a month or even a lifetime!

But what does having a healthy mind mean? What does it take to develop and maintain mental wellness?

Who is mentally healthy?

A person who has fit mental capacities is someone who is cheerful, optimistic, enthusiastic, and blissful. That person generally exudes a positive attitude which may reflect in his or her socialization, facial expressions, and speech. Basically, a mentally fit person is someone whose mood, attitude, thinking, and behavior are always on the positive note.

One who has a healthy mind is sociable. It is just so easy for that person to deal with different kinds of people because of the way the individual thinks--which is--everybody is a friend. And thanks to a positive mood and attitude toward people, this person belongs to a lot of social circles which in the long run provides positive support, meaningful connections, and a good source for favors. There's truth in the saying, “man is a social animal” after all.

An individual who practices mental wellness is good at handling problems and challenges. Of course, no one is spared from being confronted with life’s struggles, but the mentally fit person gets through all these easily and successfully. For this person, problems and trials are only a flick away.

Stress, anxiety and depression are nonexistent in this person’s vocabulary. Well, yes, this person will also have a fair share of low moments, but is wise enough not to dwell too much on them, but rather gets on his or her foot, stands tall once again, cheerful and optimistic as always.

A mentally healthy person is goal-oriented. That person sets goals and objectives in life and strives hard to make them come into fruition. These goals are relevant, workable and worthy of every exerted effort. And when goals are met, the person develops a renewed sense of fulfillment and self-worth. Such a person doesn’t brag about it, but rather humbly shares it with close allies to inspire them and spread the culture of positivity and goodness, the very attitudes akin to possessing mental wellness.

How to achieve better mental health

Doing exercises and fitness activities is one of the effective ways to achieve mental wellness. These activities not only improve the body’s physical condition but also the mental condition as well. Exercise improves blood flow, thus facilitating the efficient delivery of blood in different parts of the body, especially the brain. The brain heavily relies on blood in order to function well. A well-functioning brain is vital to having improved mood, attitude and behavior.

Exercise also improves one’s sleeping habit, thanks to its other benefits like improved heart rate, blood circulation, and metabolism. Exercise reduces tension and stress in the body, which are essential to have a peaceful and sound sleep at night.

Diet is also a good way to achieve mental wellness. Yes, the foods we consume greatly affect the processes and functioning of our mind. Experts advise that we should consume healthy foods like complex carbohydrates, good sources of protein and fats in low-calorie selections to ensure good mental conditioning. Other vitamins, minerals, and supplements including the Omega 3 amino acids, are also helpful in boosting mental health. This specific amino acid can also be obtained from foods like fish, shellfish and other fish products.

How to Optimize your Muscle Workout
June 03, 20120 Comments

One of the main reasons people go to the gym is to develop some muscles. Developing muscle fibre isn't as easy as one might expect. Without proper knowledge you could be wasting your time in the gym. Every weight trainer should  know how to maximize their muscle growth.

This article highlights some tips you should know before you start your muscle-making workout. These instructions will give you an understanding of how to utilize your time at the gym and what to consume so that you can get the perfect figure you have always desired.

To get your body energized, you must work on your body’s major muscles. This can be done with workouts like squats, dead-lifts and pull ups. These exercises are used the least by most gym users. They are a little more difficult than the others and require harder work, so they get the smallest amount of consideration from the weight trainers. Most weight lifters want to build up their visible muscles, such as their triceps and biceps. As a result, they wind up over training these muscles while not focusing on their major muscles, like the chest.

When you train your larger muscles, the smaller muscles automatically get a workout, so there is no need to work on them as intensely as your larger muscles. Also, there is often a fear of overtraining the minor muscles. This may lead to a further setback on days when you might not feel like going to the gym. Your muscles will become sore and you would have wasted your time.

Another Important factor in muscle building is your diet composition. Your body needs proper amounts of proteins, carbohydrates and fats. Proteins are generally considered as the main nutrition in gaining body muscles. Most of the nutritionists recommend eating more proteins, especially on a workout schedule.

Fats are generally considered harmful, but they are needed in order for the body to perform properly. This is even more critical when you are regularly training and working your muscles. All you should do is  replace the normal fats with healthy fats, such as Omega 3 foods. Avoid consumption of saturated fats as they do not support your workout.

Carbohydrates are also an important component in muscle growth. They provide the needed energy to burn fat and build muscle.. Also, they help in the healing of  torn muscle fibers.

You should eat about 5 to 6 portions of meals a day to ensure your body is never in starving mode. If your body has no food to break down as energy, it will acquire the necessary energy from your muscles. This is a situation that you do not want to face. Your time at the gym would have been wasted.

Once you have things in order, you will start experiencing muscle gain. Although this can be a slow and time-lagging game, have faith, you will achieve your desired size in no time.

To supplement your gym workout you might want to consider taking either protein shakes or creatine.

What exercises do you do at the gym? Get involved and add you comments below!

Chewing Slowly Promotes Better Digestion
March 24, 20120 Comments

If you are part of the majority of the population who is living a rather fast-paced urban life, you might have found yourself gulping down your meals in order to cope with your busy schedule. Although the type of food that we eat is something that we should consider as the number one priority; we should also consider the conditions that we are currently in as we eat.

No matter how nutritious a certain food item is, it could still give your body some amount of damage when you are eating it under stressful surroundings.

Fast eaters should be able to realize just how much satisfying it is to eat slower for the mind, body, and spirit. Aside from this, eating food too hastily can also give rise to a variety of health problems such as heartburn, indigestion, cramping, bloating, overeating, and weight gain.

What are the Benefits of Eating Slowly?
There are so many benefits that you can reap from actually slowing down the pace of eating your food. Better digestion is one of its most important benefits. When you are able to chew your food better, your stomach and intestines will be spared from having to work harder in order to break the food down. This leads to less digestive upset and better nutrient absorption.

When you eat slower, you are also able to hasten the rate of your metabolism. In this manner, your digestion will be slowed down, leading to more calories burned. Another way that chewing slowly can help you with losing those calories is that it will give your stomach ample time to signal the brain to tell you to stop eating. Normally, it would take 20 minutes for this signal to reach the brain. If you eat slowly, you would not have indulged yourself with too much food by the time that you are told to stop eating.

Finally, you are able to fully enjoy your food if you slow down. You will have time to actually see, taste, smell, and experience the item that you are eating. If you are a food lover, this should be one benefit that you will find very appealing.

How do I Eat Slowly?
There are quite a number of ways for you to effectively eat slowly. Most importantly, you should breathe. This will be a great way to calm down so you are more likely to practice slow eating. Take time to pause from eating at least three times during the entire meal and take in slow and deep breaths.

Also eat in a relaxed environment. Eating in front of the computer or the television is not the right way to do. Actually sit in your dining area and serve your food in the kitchen so you are less likely to take a second helping. You can also share the meal with other people and engage in positive and uplifting conversations. Pay attention to every bite that you take so you are able to experience its flavors. Put your fork down with every bite to slow your self down.

The use of chopsticks can be a very big help in making you eat your food slower. This is especially true if you are having a rather difficult time in using it. If you are not too great with chopsticks, you can use them as a very fine way to eat and chew slower than the usual.

10 Hair Care Rules to Break Now!
February 29, 20120 Comments

It is time to break hair care rules you have been following for years. By doing so, you may discover how healthy your hair can be with simple changes.

Break This Rule: Get a trim every 6 - 8 weeks. Getting a regular trim is a vital necessity for healthy hair.
If you want to grow out your hair than space out those trims to every 8 - 12 weeks, and continue to follow hair care rules to minimize breakage.

Break This Rule: You can never get enough moisture for your hair.
Too much moisture can cause problems. Moisturizing incorrectly can weigh hair down and possibly cause bacterial infections. Make sure to find the right styling products for your hair type.

Break This Rule: Vigorously towel-dry your hair before using the blow dryer.
Never treat wet hair to excessive rubbing or pulling because it is extremely fragile when wet. Let your hair air dry for as long as possible and towel drying your hair, make sure to blot not rub.

Break This Rule: Buy salon products for the best hair treatments.
It is easy to believe that the $30.00 serum is why your hair looks fabulous when your stylist shows you the mirror. Hair health begins from the inside out, and your hair will show if you are not taking care of yourself.

Break This Rule: Switching products keeps hair looking fresh.
Build up from hair products is not going to disappear by changing hair products. Use clarifying shampoo about twice a month and an intensive moisturizing treatment to enhance the shine we all crave.

Break This Rule: Buy products with labels that say natural, organic or claimto have healthy oils.
You read the labels on your cereal, snacks and other food. Read your labels on hair care products too.  Products that jump on the all-natural bandwagon may still have fragrances, alcohol and chemicals that will damage hair.

Break This Rule: Banish all signs of gray hair.
Gray hairs make fantastic highlights when taken care of correctly. Stylists can also give proper advice about how to make gray hair look stunning.

Break This Rule: it is my -insert age here- birthday, and I am too old for long hair.
There is no reason to feel pressure to cut your hair after a certain age. Banish this rule along with any other age related barrier holding us back.

Break This Rule: Your best friend's hair rules are not necessarily going to work for you.
Pay attention to what your hair type is - not what works for your bestfriend. Using the wrong products are going to make for lousy hair days - every day.

Break This Rule: Mother knows best.
Stop following the old wives tales that may even harm your hair. Lather, rinse and repeat is a smart marketing tool, but the practice is murder on the moisture content in your hair. Brushing hair a hundred strokes only breaks the hair and makes it staticky. Hair does not grow back thicker after shaving, it only seems that way.

The most significant rule to follow that allows hair to be its healthiest is to take care of yourself. Healthy hair needs a diet with antioxidants, vitamins and proteins. Treat your hair well with minimal chemicals and embrace your tresses in their natural state.

Giving your hair a break from the stress of heat and chemicals will reward you with terrific hair days.

Diet Frustrations: Is Morning Snacking Really To Be Blamed?
December 04, 20111 Comments

To snack or not to snack, that is the question? Which one serves as the right guideline worth applying to your diet program?

A recent study published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association revealed that snacking between breakfast and lunch is likely to ruin your weight loss plan by packing on extra calories.

Women who avoided snacking in the midmorning were likely to maintain a weight loss of 11 percent of body weight over the course of a year as opposed to those women who chose to snack; their snacking accounted for a weight loss of only 7 percent of body weight.

This new data contradict previous weight loss studies that show snacking as a healthy habit to incorporate in your diet to stave off cravings and reduce overeating at meal times?

A few weeks before this no munching guideline was announced, another published study outlined that people who “snack have diets that are slightly healthier overall than people who don’t snack.”  Both studies’ have opposing viewpoints and were published within the same month. It is no wonder why a large number of individuals are frustrated with changing diet rules and misleading headlines on weight reduction. So which is the real healthy weight loss solution?

The study is available online; gather your individual perspective on the recommended guidelines for dieters instead of accepting snippet reports. Gain insight into the reason why morning snacking was underscored as counterproductive to weight loss.

Morning snacking is not the cause but a precursor to psychological and emotional cravings not borne out of hunger. Individuals who consume snacks less than 2 hours after a meal are likely to carry-out “mindless snacking habits” throughout the day.  Emotional eaters tend to reach out for comfort foods such as: doughnuts, chocolates, fries, and other decadent high calorie snacks. Overall, they consume more calories at each meal.

Researchers, who conducted the study, stated that “the urge to grab a snack during the relatively short time between breakfast and lunch could be a sign of generally less healthy eating.” The same researchers also say “eating healthy snacks can help dieters reach their goal by staving off hunger.”

If you are still on-the-fence as to which snacking rule to comply with just remember this: the bulk of your food intake should come from fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. To get the recommended amount in your diet without supplements requires that you snack.  Snacking on healthy foods, counting calories, and getting a brisk walk for 30 minutes a day is the right start to any diet plan.

Exercise: The Power Of Movement
October 11, 20110 Comments

The human body is built for movement. It is a marvel of human engineering with skeletal bones and muscles designed to withstand compression forces that far exceeds our own body weight. Look at the physical structure of Olympic athletes! Their well-defined physique is a display of how structured training can develop the body to push the limits on performance.

Energy is life! You need a balanced diet to create the fuel to exercise--they go hand in hand to produce a highly functioning immune system-- an overall powerhouse of health. Many of us are unaware of the restorative significance by which exercise can reverse a disease process such as partial paralysis suffered from a stroke [cerebrovascular accident]. It indicates the unmistakable role of exercise to add to your quality of life. Your brain, heart, lungs, muscles, and blood vessels depend on movement for survival, otherwise these tissue cells eventually die.

Many times I have heard the question: am I exercising when I move around the home or office? No; exercise is a physical or mental activity that involves training for the specific purpose to improve your health. Your exercise has to be structured and repetitive to serve the purpose of total body conditioning. That is why going to work and moving around your desk cannot be measured equally as physical exertion. Avoid a sedentary lifestyle! It is harmful to your health and wellbeing.

When you do very little activity, you feel sluggish, sickly, and not mentally alert. Overcome this cycle by using these easy guides:

Physical Activity:

Are You A Morning Or A Night Person?
Choose the time of day that you are likely to have the most energy and are inclined to exercise.  All of us have a set time of day when we are most alert. Use that booster time to begin an exercise routine!

Are You Into Aerobics , Yoga,  Body-toning, Or A Combination Of All—Type Of Person?
Find out what exercise best suits your rhythm and stick with it.  Exercise can be a healthy addiction. Once you enjoy your type of exercise you will be motivated to continue your routine for the long-haul.

Are Your Unable To Find The Time?
“Yes you can!” Since we are using an Obama slogan, let’s speak of him.  He is an ultimate exercise buff who believes in finding the time for exercise, no matter what. If the president can do it while having a busy schedule, so can you!

Needless to say, when you start an exercise program your eating habits should also change. Incorporate a healthy diet with vitamins or supplements to your routine and maximize your health benefits. Our body is a masterpiece in its own right—safeguard it—start an exercise routine today!

“We do not stop exercising because we grow old—we grow old because we stop exercising”
