Workout Hygiene!
July 29, 20120 Comments

Gyms are supposed to be the places we go to get healthy, but for many people, it can be a place where they get sick! We have perhaps all heard stories of athletes getting serious, even fatal, staph infections, but those are just the extreme cases. Most often, people who pick up germs from the gym find themselves with athlete’s foot, a cold, or some sort of virus that does less damage, but messes up their routines nonetheless. That being said, paying attention to hygiene at the gym can save you a headache at least, and your life at worst! So if I haven’t scared you too much, let’s see what sorts of measures we can take.

Choose a Gym that’s Clean

Before you begin working out at any gym, you should ensure that it is a clean one. Most gym membership orientations are short and don’t offer much time to really survey the area. If you can, do a trial membership to really scope the place out. Ask about your gym’s sanitation standards and practices, and take notice of how well the staff meets those standards. Ensure that the staff is wiping down machines that members leave sweaty and using sanitizer spray as they do so.

Also, be sure to check the restrooms! A gym is only as clean as its restrooms. Most people don’t think about this, but gyms and kitchens are the worst places to have poor hygiene in the restrooms. If the floors are not clean and there is no soap in the dispenser, there’s a good chance that someone took their business out to the rack of dumbbells you just touched. I’m just saying. A messy bathroom ensures germs of the type that, due to the nature of a bathroom, can probably make you sick. So, look for clean restrooms and ensure that your gym is committed to cleanliness.

Finally, discover what your gym’s rule is about cuts/scrapes. Since gyms are places where people are sweaty, and have lots of contact with surfaces that are touched by others, staph infections are a real danger for those with open wounds. Find out what your gym’s policy is about covering wounds. A good gym will seek to care for its members.

Wipe Everything You Touch

If you expect the gym to be clean, then it is essential for you to be clean as well! Carry at least one sweat rag with you wherever you go (one for wiping machines and the other for wiping sweat from yourself), and it wouldn’t hurt to keep a small bottle of hand sanitizer if your gym doesn’t have public hand sani stations (which most do nowadays). If your gym has paper towel dispensers and cleaner spray stations available then it would be ok to be less strict about carrying your own towel, only make sure that you are minimizing your contact between your face and hands. Remember, as I always say, “A gym can only be as clean as its most irresponsible member.”

Clean Yourself Before Going Home

The locker rooms in most gyms have showers that are there for a reason. Even if you live close by, consider showering at your gym to ensure that you leave at the gym anything you picked up there. Only, to avoid athlete’s foot keep some cheap flip-flops in your gym bag.

Wash Your Workout Clothes Daily

Ok, so I’ve been around gyms and locker rooms for most of my life, and I know there are a few of you out there who really think you can wear the same gym clothes for a week at a time without washing them since you know you are going to just get them dirty again. Gross. You should be ashamed. Unless your idea of a good time is sending a friend request to a staph infection then wash your gym clothes daily (or at least wear a new set of clean ones)! Staph and other types of bacteria love dark and damp places where they can start families and colonies and cultures, and when you choose not to wash your clothes, you become a cross-cultural missionary to everyone in your gym.

So, all in all, gyms are fun and safe places when you stay clean and hold your gym staff to a high standard. Most people never get sick at their gym, but sometimes a healthy reminder and mildly funny exhortations about staph can help us in our hygienic journey!

How to Optimize your Muscle Workout
June 03, 20120 Comments

One of the main reasons people go to the gym is to develop some muscles. Developing muscle fibre isn't as easy as one might expect. Without proper knowledge you could be wasting your time in the gym. Every weight trainer should  know how to maximize their muscle growth.

This article highlights some tips you should know before you start your muscle-making workout. These instructions will give you an understanding of how to utilize your time at the gym and what to consume so that you can get the perfect figure you have always desired.

To get your body energized, you must work on your body’s major muscles. This can be done with workouts like squats, dead-lifts and pull ups. These exercises are used the least by most gym users. They are a little more difficult than the others and require harder work, so they get the smallest amount of consideration from the weight trainers. Most weight lifters want to build up their visible muscles, such as their triceps and biceps. As a result, they wind up over training these muscles while not focusing on their major muscles, like the chest.

When you train your larger muscles, the smaller muscles automatically get a workout, so there is no need to work on them as intensely as your larger muscles. Also, there is often a fear of overtraining the minor muscles. This may lead to a further setback on days when you might not feel like going to the gym. Your muscles will become sore and you would have wasted your time.

Another Important factor in muscle building is your diet composition. Your body needs proper amounts of proteins, carbohydrates and fats. Proteins are generally considered as the main nutrition in gaining body muscles. Most of the nutritionists recommend eating more proteins, especially on a workout schedule.

Fats are generally considered harmful, but they are needed in order for the body to perform properly. This is even more critical when you are regularly training and working your muscles. All you should do is  replace the normal fats with healthy fats, such as Omega 3 foods. Avoid consumption of saturated fats as they do not support your workout.

Carbohydrates are also an important component in muscle growth. They provide the needed energy to burn fat and build muscle.. Also, they help in the healing of  torn muscle fibers.

You should eat about 5 to 6 portions of meals a day to ensure your body is never in starving mode. If your body has no food to break down as energy, it will acquire the necessary energy from your muscles. This is a situation that you do not want to face. Your time at the gym would have been wasted.

Once you have things in order, you will start experiencing muscle gain. Although this can be a slow and time-lagging game, have faith, you will achieve your desired size in no time.

To supplement your gym workout you might want to consider taking either protein shakes or creatine.

How to keep active on holiday without packing a gym kit
March 27, 20120 Comments

It’s demoralizing to come back from your holiday and find that you’ve put on some pounds or that you are simply not as flexible or as strong as you were before. When you want to stay fit even when you are seeing the world, there are definitely options for you. While some people try to pack their weights and their scale for the road, check out some of these ways to stay in good shape even when you are off having a blast with your friends and family.

Go Swimming

If you are headed on a tropical vacation, you’re definitely going to bring your swimsuit. After spending all day at the beach, however, don’t forget that your hotel likely has a swimming pool as well. Swimming is a wonderful low-impact exercise, and it is a great way to relax after you have spent a lot of time running around during the day.

Walk Everywhere

When you are on holiday and you want to see the sites, check out areas where there is a lot of walking. Maybe you want to see the museums, or perhaps you’d like to walk around an old historic area and see what life was like years ago. A lot of walking is very good for you, and it keeps your level of energy high, even if you are not necessarily feeling the burn.

Eat In

If at all possible, get a hotel suite that has a kitchenette and purchase groceries from the local vendors. Not only will this give you the fun experience of seeing what the locals buy and eat, it will also cut down on the empty calories and sluggishness that you get from eating out all the time. This is also much better for your wallet.

Try New Exercises

Check out the area where you are going and see if they have any fun, physically-oriented classes that you want to take advantage of. For example, are you interested in hula dancing while you are in Hawaii, or water skiing on the Florida beaches? Exercise doesn’t need to take the form of weights or aerobics, so take the opportunity to learn more about the area you are in while staying in great shape.

Biking

If you are visiting a wonderfully scenic area, rent some bikes and see it from the road. A bike ride is a great cardio exercise, and you’ll find that there are plenty of opportunities for you to stop and see what your holiday area has to offer. This is a great family activity or a great activity for someone to do on their own. Small children can often be towed along on trailers, as well.

Take some time to think about how you can stay active while on holiday. You don’t want to get back and find that all of the work that you have put into your workout has disappeared, so take step to stay on top of things.

The Best Outdoor Work-Outs for Couples
December 15, 2011 2 Comments

As much as you want to trim down your shape, it gets boring to step in gyms day after day. Why don’t you make it an outdoor activity for once? It would be best if you ask your partner to come with you. You are not only becoming physically fit, both of you are strengthening the bonds of your relationship. Below, you will see some outdoor activities which will help you perspire without the need of those bulky gym equipment.

Spend your weekend hiking. Drop your business suits, office bags and fancy gadgets. It’s about time that you go natural. Check out your nearest hiking spot for an exciting  exploration of nature. You can ask your partner to save one whole weekend for this. Hiking can be very strenuous but fun. Both of you will have a great time flexing those muscles while you enjoy the great view. I suggest that you bring your tent and spend the entire night at the camp site. Don’t forget your fishing rods! Get the biggest catch for a festive evening.

Play Frisbee at your local park.  Frisbee disks won’t cost you a lot. Visit your local park and use the vast area. When playing this game, you have no choice but to run and jump. I believe that it’s better than staying in the gym with your treadmills and gym balls.
To make it more fun, the winner of the game becomes the master of the day. That means, he or she can ask you to cook dinner. Perhaps, they can ask you to a 30 - minute massage. You are not only getting in shape, you are having more emotional attachment. It’s good for your relationship.
Visit the nearest theme parks. You think that theme parks are for kids. Well, I believe there’s a kid inside everyone of us. It seems that it’s a bizarre work out place. However, this can be a great spot to do fun and weird exercises.
Have breathing exercises while riding an extreme coaster. Shape up your biceps with fun games. Think about the huge hammers for this. Or if you want, you can just jog from one ride to another. This can be very good for you. It’s recommended that you lighten up. Forget about your reports just for this day.

Straighten your garden. If you don’t have time to leave your premises, you can just go to your backyard. Trim down your grass and replace your flowers. Trust me, in just an hour, you’ll be sweating like a professional athlete.
Heavy gym equipments are not the only things that can help you get fit. Throw your dumbbells and get your backpacks, garden rakes and a bottle of water. Let’s do the alternative exercises to be physically and emotionally fit.
